Background
Our client was a manufacturing company with around 110 employees. It had no internal HR support, and engaged with EML on a retained basis.
Problem
The client had experienced rapid growth during the Covid-19 pandemic, but post-Covid the overcapacity in its distributor network led to a contraction, resulting in the need to cut the labour force by around 10%.
Solution
EML worked as part of the clientโs HR team to plan and deliver a redundancy programme which fully complied with employment law and also ensured that the company retained (as far as possible) key skills and experience. Our support included:
- Assisting the company with initial employee briefings
- Designing a selection matrix which gave adequate weight to skills and experience
- Guiding managers to confidently undertake the scoring process
- Accompanying managers in one-to-one consultation meetings with those affected
- Drafting all employee correspondence in respect of the process
- Calculating termination payments
- Dealing with any appeals.
Outcome
The client implemented around 10 redundancies in a period of 3-4 weeks without receiving a single Employment Tribunal or Early Conciliation claim in respect of the process.
