Latest fatality figures published by HSE

According to recent data published by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), 135 workers were killed in work-related incidents in Great Britain in the last year. The data covers the period from April 2022 to March 2023 and highlights an increase on last year’s figures, with the construction sector reporting most deaths.

Other industries reporting high numbers of worker deaths include agriculture, forestry and fishing, manufacturing, and transportation and storage. Agriculture and forestry and fishing had the highest rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers of all the main industrial sectors, followed by waste and recycling. The three most common causes of fatal injuries were falls from height, being struck by a moving object, and being struck by a moving vehicle.

The data highlights the importance of maintaining safe practices within the workplace and why Health and Safety should be on every organisation’s agenda. The Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) have responded to the numbers by calling for “continued strength and efforts to ensure people are protected at work”.

As well as supporting our clients with employment-related issues, EML also provide Health and Safety support. From advice and risk assessments to onsite audits, training and high level policies and procedures, our qualified Health, Safety & Wellbeing Consultant, Joanne Howley, can support your business and assist with creating bespoke, user-friendly, Health and Safety documentation.

You may consider Health and Safety to be an unnecessary expense at a time when cost pressures are already high. However, our affordable monthly retainer service will allow you to ensure that you meet your legal Health and Safety obligations whilst retaining the operational flexibility you need to achieve your organisation’s commercial objectives.

If you want your managers and supervisors to have a greater understanding of theirs and the organisation’s Health and Safety responsibilities, and the practical knowledge needed to control the risks in your workplace, register them for our IOSH Managing Safely® course which takes place between 2nd – 5th October 2023 at Blackburn Rovers Business Centre. We currently have a special introductory offer of £375 +VAT for our first course (usual price £475), and the first 5 delegates to sign up will receive a further £25 discount! Registration details and further information can be found here.

There’s no denying health and safety is a complex, ever-changing area so relax in the knowledge that EML are here to assist you with your responsibilities. Give Jo a call today on 01942 727200 or email enquiries@employeemanagement.co.uk for an initial consultation without charge or obligation.
