The COVID pandemic has resulted in employee mental health becoming more of a priority than ever before. As we approach Mental Health Awareness Week, which this year focuses on the theme of ‘loneliness’, this article discusses the importance of supporting mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, and how EML can help.
Under section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act, employers have a duty of care to protect the mental health of their employees, as much as their physical health. There is also a strong financial incentive to do so. According to statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), more than half of Britain’s working days were lost in 2019/20 due to work-related ill health, and the rate of self-reported work-related stress, depression or anxiety increased significantly during the pandemic.
Research conducted by Deloitte suggests that this is costing UK employers up to £45 billion a year, a rise of 16% since 2016. The research found that on average, for every £1 spent on supporting mental health, employers receive £5 return on their investment in reduced presenteeism, absenteeism and staff turnover. It, therefore, pays to support employees’ mental health and wellbeing.
As an employer or line manager, it is not always clear how to tackle these issues but that’s where EML can help. A good wellbeing programme will enable an organisation to create an environment where employees can meet their physical, mental, financial and social needs.
EML has an accredited Mental Health First Aider, Jo Howley who is available to support employers in developing a workplace culture that supports employee health. This could include:
-
- The delivery of tailored, company-specific coaching to line managers focused on implementing positive mental health initiatives.
- Design and roll-out of bespoke documentation to assist with the support and management of mental health within the organisation.
- Working with the organisation to develop a culture that removes the stigma surrounding mental health and encourages open conversation.
- A Mental Health Toolkit for line managers, and guidance to help them to support employees absent from work.
- Helping the organisation to develop a wellbeing strategy to improve overall business performance.
On 14 June, EML will be holding a FREE breakfast seminar at The Base, Warrington to discuss the importance of a health, safety and wellbeing programme and how to manage absence related to mental health in the workplace. There will also be an opportunity to consider the move of some organisations to introduce a 4-day working week, and the issues this may give rise to.
