Area of work: Human Resources
Sector: Manufacturing
Date/Length of relationship: 2016 – present
Background
The company had experienced a significant amount of change since the recession, which resulted in a downsizing of the workforce, re-evaluation of production methods and reduction in the range of products being produced.
This led to the business consolidating to ensure that it remained viable during a difficult trading period. However, it was now in a position where it was looking to regenerate and expand.
Previously, the company had operated with one full-time HR professional, supported by a firm of solicitors when required.
Problem
The company’s dedicated internal HR professional was due to leave the business and whilst the company had access to legal support from solicitors, they had concerns around compliance and felt they could improve in certain areas. The business sought specialist operational guidance to ensure a swift handover to the successor and a positive impact on the business.
The company was referred to EML by one of its directors who had worked with us previously.
Solution
We undertook a full audit of all HR processes, procedures and practices, with particular focus on the following areas:
- Recruitment, Selection, Induction and Manpower Planning
- Reward
- Performance
- Training & Development
- Discipline & Grievance
- Termination
An experienced HR professional was assigned to the project, which took place over a period of 5 days. This included:
- Full electronic / hard copy file audit with detailed exceptions report
- One-to-one meetings with key stakeholders across the business
- Review of existing documentation including:
- Contracts of Employment
- Employee Handbook
- Policies & Procedures
On completion of the audit, we prepared a comprehensive report detailing results, recommendations and an action plan.
Outcome
The incoming HR professional had clear guidance on where improvements needed to be made and was able to quickly identify priorities by focusing her attention on the areas highlighted by our audit.
EML has continued to provide ongoing support, both on and off site, with HR and Health & Safety matters, particularly in complex disciplinary and grievance proceedings, tribunal representation, settlement arrangements, HSE inspections, Health and Safety audits and risk assessments.
